BTRi launching of Technical Specification for Remote Control Tower Crane System
To support the development of the Remote Control Tower Crane System (RCTCS), as promulgated under Development Bureau Technical Circular (Works) No. 09/2025 – Adoption of Construction Robots, the Building Technology Research Institute (BTRi) is collaborating with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to develop the world’s first comprehensive technical specification for the RCTCS as a reference for the trade. This specification incorporates input from all stakeholders. It not only establishes operational standards and safety control requirements for the RCTCS in Hong Kong, but also serves as a foundation for formulating future GBA standard.
The RCTCS relocates the control console of conventional tower cranes from elevated cabins to a ground‑based remote control station, enabling operators to conduct lifting operations in a safer and more ergonomic working environment. By removing operators from isolated and congested high‑level cabins, RCTCS significantly reduces exposure to extreme weather conditions, fatigue, and fall‑related risks. In addition to enhancing occupational safety and operator welfare, RCTCS helps address industry challenges such as skilled labour shortages, while improving lifting accuracy and overall construction productivity.
We sincerely appreciate the valuable insights contributed by representatives from government authorities, academic institutions, key construction industry stakeholders, professional associations, and trade associations, whose collective efforts are driving construction innovation.
