Media Coverage | BTRi Advances Construction Standards Optimisation to Foster High-Quality Development Across the Greater Bay Area
On 16 June 2026, Sing Tao Daily published an in-depth feature reporting on the latest achievements of the Building Technology Research Institute (BTRi). The coverage explores how BTRi's work in reviewing existing construction standards and refining accreditation schemes is directly contributing to improved efficiency for large-scale projects, including those under the Northern Metropolis development.
(1) Standards review and advancement: BTRi is actively reviewing current construction standards, with a focus on optimising cost-significant design parameters and developing regional guidelines that reduce both project costs and construction duration. In parallel, BTRi is formulating local standards for innovative materials and technologies, positioning these for broader adoption as GBA-wide standards and elevating Hong Kong's role in regional standards development.
(2) Streamlined product accreditation: The centralised pre-assessment framework under the Construction Product Accreditation Scheme (CPAS) is enabling overseas and GBA suppliers to bring quality-assured building products to the Hong Kong market more efficiently, promoting integration across the cross-boundary construction value chain.
(3) Enabling smart construction adoption: Aligned with the Development Bureau's established benchmarks, BTRi is developing an objective benchmarking mechanism to assess the performance of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) applications in construction, giving SMEs the assurance needed to embrace new technologies. Safety and technical standards for remote-control tower crane systems and construction robotics are also being formulated to drive productivity gains on site.
