BTRi Hosts Workshop on Review of Design Wind Pressure for the Northern Metropolis

22 April 2026

On 22 April 2026, the Building Technology Research Institute (BTRi) convened a workshop on the Review of Design Wind Pressure for the Northern Metropolis. The workshop brought together key stakeholders from government departments, leading academic institutions, professional bodies and industry practitioners – to gather collective insights and feedback on the development of the first region-specific wind load provisions, designed to accelerate development and enhance the cost-effectiveness across the Northern Metropolis.

This study was commissioned to review the design wind pressures for the Northern Metropolis in light of its more inland location and future large-scale development. It examines whether refinements to the existing wind profile assumptions are warranted to better reflect local terrain conditions and wind characteristics. The study comprises two complementary parts: one assessing the influence of terrain and ground roughness on wind pressure using established design principles, and the other evaluating the regional wind climate based on site measurements, historical data, and advanced simulations and wind tunnel testing. Together, the findings provide a technical basis to support more robust and sustainable wind design for development in the Northern Metropolis.

BTRi remains committed to driving continuous, targeted reviews of design standards and practice - to meaningfully influence engineering outcomes and accelerate development progress.
