Accelerating Innovation: BTRi Hosts Global UHPC Expert Dr. Voo Yen Lei in Hong Kong

9 March 2026

BTRi was honoured to host Dr. Voo Yen Lei, a world-renowned Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) expert and the Founder, Director, and CTO of Dura Technology Sdn Bhd (Malaysia), for a series of high-impact knowledge exchange sessions in Hong Kong.  Dr. Voo brings unparalleled expertise, having overseen the design and construction of more than 400 UHPC bridges across Malaysia and India, establishing himself as one of the foremost authorities in the field. His visit aimed to connect global experience with local practice, demonstrating the proven applications and structural advantages of UHPC. To maximize the impact of his visit, BTRi facilitated three key events:

1) Strategic Dialogue with the UHPC Task Force Meeting
A productive session chaired by the Assistant Director (Technical) of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD), featuring representatives from the Highways Department (HyD), CEDD and key engineering consultants.

2) Public Lecture at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU)
Co-organised with Chair Professor C.S. Poon at the PolyU, this open lecture attracted over 100 industry professionals—including consultants, contractors, academics, and suppliers — highlighting the strong market interest for advanced cementitious materials. The session explored how UHPC is redefining the boundaries of engineering design, structural performance, and material innovation.

3) UHPC Workshop at BTRi office
A dedicated workshop at BTRi office engaged a wide range of stakeholders, including representatives from different government departments, including the Development Bureau (DEVB), Architectural Services Department (ArchSD), Buildings Department (BD), and private sector leaders.

The response to this series of events was overwhelmingly positive, characterised by spirited discussions and deep technical inquiries from all participants. Dr. Voo’s sharing of practical case studies and proven structural solutions has not only clarified technical queries but also significantly bolstered confidence among government bodies and industry leaders regarding the adoption of UHPC. Capitalising on this strong momentum, BTRi remains committed to organising similar high-impact initiatives to accelerate the wider use of advanced construction materials in Hong Kong, including an executive visit to Malaysia in May to gain deeper insights into the real-life application cases and the supply chain.
