Comparative Study on Fire Resistance Standards for Interior Materials and Furniture
Commissioned By:
Project Overview:
To ensure fire safety, the Hong Kong Fire Services Department (FSD) has been actively reviewing existing requirements to deliver clearer and more flexible guidelines for the trade while safeguarding public safety. To facilitate the trade and provide more diversified options, the FSD commissioned the Building Technology Research Institute (BTRi) to conduct a comparative study on the fire resistance standards currently accepted for interior materials and furniture using in licensed premises, benchmarking these against national and other international standards.
With the support of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), the study covers standards including GB, BS, EN, ASTM, NFPA, UL and California TB, evaluating their applicability in licensed premises, such as food premises, places of public entertainment and hotels, etc., in order to provide the trade with a scientific and flexible standards options that balance safety and operational needs.
Key Achievement:
Provide technical recommendations on alternative fire resistance standards for the FSD and the trade.
