BTRi and CEDD Jointly Organised the “Workshop on the Development of Innovative Construction Materials” to Promote Innovation and Collaborative Development in the Construction Industry
On 11 December 2025, Building Technology Research Institute (BTRi) and the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) successfully co‑organized the “Workshop on the Development of Innovative Construction Materials”.
This workshop aimed to promote the advancement of high‑quality, cost‑effective, safe, and sustainable construction materials in local applications, with a focus on the cutting‑edge developments of low-carbon construction materials, such as ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) and semi‑flexible pavements. We were honoured to have Mr. Michael Fong Hok‑shing, Director of Civil Engineering and Development Department, Mr. Tony Yau Kwok-ting, Director of Highways Department, join this event alongside their respective teams, as well as representatives from the Drainage Services, Water Supplies, and Architectural Services Departments.
We were also joined by delegates from leading universities and industry associations, including The University of Hong Kong (HKU), The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Construction Industry Council (CIC), The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), The Association of Consulting Engineers of Hong Kong (ACEHK), Hong Kong Construction Materials Association (HKCMA), Hong Kong Concrete Institute (HKCI), and Jiangsu Institute of Building Science Co., Ltd. We were especially privileged to have Professor LIU Jia-ping, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, serve as our keynote speaker.
Ir WONG Kwok‑fai, Alfred, Chief Executive Officer of BTRi, stated in his speech: “As one of the promoters of innovation in Hong Kong’s construction industry, BTRi is dedicated to building a collaborative platform connecting universities, government, and industry.” He also remarked, “Today’s workshop marks a new starting point for collaboration. Looking ahead, we look forward to deepening collaboration among the Government, the industry, academia, and research, transforming today’s ideas into tomorrow’s engineering practices, and enabling innovative technologies—such as Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) and Semi-flexible Pavements—to create greater value in the development of the Northern Metropolis and the collaborative growth of the Greater Bay Area.”
BTRi will continue to leverage its unique advantages to drive construction innovation and advance standards, further enhancing the cost-effectiveness in the construction industry.
