Project Title: Consultancy Study for Developing a Road Map for Utilising Incineration Bottom Ash in Hong Kong
Project Overview:
BTRi, commissioned by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD), is conducting a feasibility study of recycling the incineration bottom ash (IBA) from the Integrated Waste Management Facilities developed for handling and treating the municipal solid waste in Hong Kong. This study aims to promote sustainable waste management practices and reduce reliance on landfill disposal, by transforming the IBA into valuable construction materials or products, such as non-structural concrete and fill materials in embankments.
Key Achievement:
The key achievements of this study are expected to be:
- A comprehensive literature review on the existing research studies, technical standards, policies, practices and technologies regarding recycling of IBA;
- An analysis for determining the capacity of the local market to absorb IBA-derived construction materials or products;
- A detailed characterization of the composition of Hong Kong’s IBA; and
- Recommendations of IBA treatment technologies.
Way Forwards:
Further to the outcome of this study, the way forwards for the road map implementation are expected to be:
- Development of Hong Kong technical standards for IBA-derived materials;
- Conducting pilot projects; and
- Stakeholder Engagement.
