The June 2026 issue of Hong Kong Engineer, the Journal of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), features Building Technology Research Institute (BTRi) as its Cover Story, spotlighting BTRi’s journey from establishment to measurable industry impact in just over a year.

Titled “From Blueprint to Breakthrough: BTRi’s Mission to Transform the Construction Industry”, the feature sets out how BTRi is transforming the industry through its three core functions: advancing construction standards, offering trusted accreditation and certification services, and bridging the gap between innovation to industry wide adoption through applied research and development.

Key results highlighted include:

·      Standards advancement: Optimise cost-significant design parameters for Hong Kong's long-standing standards and establish local and Greater Bay Area (GBA) standards for innovative materials and technologies;

·      Accreditation, certification and testing: Launched Construction Product Accreditaion Scheme (CPAS), recognised by all public works projects from January 2026 onwards, plus Modular Integrated Construction Manufacturer Accreditation Scheme (MiC-MAS) accreditation now required for approved MiC suppliers in public works;

·      Applied R&D: Real-world outcomes include wind tunnel testing that reduced noise barrier construction costs by approximately 20%, and locally developed Low-Density Engineered Cementitious Composites (LD-ECC) that reduced construction time by around 50%.

BTRi remains steadfast in its mission to act as a strategic catalyst for construction innovation and strengthen Hong Kong's role as an International Infrastructure Centre. BTRi will continue to leveraging Hong Kong's unique position as a "super connector" and "super value-adder" to redefine our influence in shaping a high-performing, sustainable built environment.
